My Hero - Mr. Chiam See Tong

As the General Election 2011 is just around the corner, I would like to dedicate a post to Mr. Chiam See Tong, Secretary-General to the Singapore People's Party. IMO, he is the unsung hero of Singapore.

1976 – contested unsuccessfully as Independent Candidate at Cairnhill Constituency against Mr. Lim Kim San Minster for National Development and Communications.
1979 – Took part in by-election also as independent candidate at Potong Pasir. Lost to Mr. How Yoong Chong, Minster for Defence designate.
September 1980 – Together with friends formed the Singapore Democratic Party.
December 1980 – Contested unsuccessfully at Potong Pasir. Again lost to Mr. How Yoong Chong, Minister for Defence. Obtained 40% votes.
December 1984 – Contested at Potong Pasir as a SDP Candidate at Potong Pasir. Won with 60% majority vote.
September 1988 – Returned again at Potong Pasir Constituency with 63%. 31.08.1991 – Elected third time to Parliament, Potong Pasir constituency with 69.3% votes casted.
17th of December 1996 – Elected Secretary-General of Singapore People’s Party (SPP).
2nd of January 1997 – Elected fourth time to Parliament, Constituency of Potong Pasir as a Singapore People’s Party (SPP) candidate with 54.3% votes polled
2001 – Elected fifth time to Parliament, Constituency of Potong Pasir as a Singapore People’s Party (SPP) candidate with 54.3% votes polled.
2006 – Elected six time to Parliament, Constituency of Potong Pasir as a Singapore People’s Party (SPP) candidate with 54.3% votes polled.

For 27 years, he has slogged hard to conduct his Meet-the-People session at void decks. He is denied of funds to build a proper place but we can see his determination and dedication from the aluminum sheets used to build his make shift office. Why would a man want to become a MP even though he understands that he has to go through so much, even being denied of funds to do every simple thing? Do you live in a PAP constituency? Have you ever seen the MPs from PAP conduct their Meet-the-People session? Its is done is a air-conditioned office. What a stark difference!

This is Mr. Chiam's office for the past 27 years
This man has been bullied for 27years how much longer are we going to let him get bullied and pushed aside by the people hamming the government of Singapore? This man here is fighting so hard for democracy.

Have you watch Mr. Chiam See Tong in Parliament?

This was Mr. Chiam asking for Potong Pasir to be included in the upgrading program. Why was Potong Pasir not included in the HIP even when Mr. Chiam agreed that they are in agreement of the program? People of Potong Pasir, Mr. Chiam fought for you but did the Government listen?

Here is Mr. Chiam asking for curbing of the influx of foreigners by a skills shortage list and to cut down on GST. Singapore Government, are you listening or did you fall asleep listening to Mr. Chiam? He is physically weak but he is fighting for us. Singapore can you hear him?

If you are wondering why is his speech slurred, Mr. Chiam has suffered 2 strokes, the last one in 2008. It touches me to tears that a man who has suffered 2 strokes is fighting hard for democracy in Singapore. Is he fighting for fame or money? No, he is fighting because he loves Singapore! Most people at his age would have been retired and should be enjoying life but not Mr. Chiam, not until the day there is true democracy!

This is a letter sent to someone who just moved to Potong Pasir. Which PAP MP do you know does this?
This General Election, Mr. Chiam will be walking out of Potong Pasir, to contest in the Bishan-TPY GRC. He is walking out of his comfort zone and leaving Potong Pasir to his wife, Mrs. Lina Chiam. This is a very big risk for him. He might lose Potong Pasir and Bishan-TPY, and lose his seat as the only one of two Opposition in the Parliament or he could win Bishan-TPY GRC and bring in 4 other Opposition MPs into the Parliament to make the government sit up and listen to what we have to say.

I have lived in Bishan-TPY all my life and I have NEVER met Mr. Wong Kan Seng, the current MP in charge of my constituency. Its very clear who my vote goes to. Do you live in Bishan-TPY? Who are you voting for?

Lastly, a quote from my hero,
"When there is life there is hope, when there is hope, there will be change."

Thank you for sharing.

I am very touched by this, not like some "emotional" talk conjured up just to win votes. (Read: George Yeo)

I truly believe that Mr. Chiam is one who serves with his heart. He said that he is actually not a brave man but he loves Singapore!

How many MPs can say the same? He serve not for the million dollar salary but for us, I respect and salute him for all that he has done for us!

Mr Chiam have shown us that we do not necessarily need MPs who are "elites" to voice our concerns in Parliament.

We do not need to pay True Singaporeans with a Heart, millions of dollars to entice them to work for the better future of Singaporeans.

Mr Chiam is truly a hero. He stand so much to lose being a politician but he stand firm just to defend democracy and government accountability.

No words can explain my utmost respect for him. Seriously.

If not for I got married after the last election and has to change my NRIC add; I would have been able to cast a vote for Potong Pasir this time round. When I was still a kid, I remembered tagging along with my parents to the past rallies. What one get to witness are the residents of Potong Pasir coming together as one...never are sympathy votes but votes of dignity and integrity. Totally agree with blogger, about the things that Mr.Chiam does and experienced. The personalized letter... the insufficient funds...the never-give-up attitude.. the humiliations that this noble man has gone through for us for democracy. Kudos to you Sir!

He is a good example of a politician who is willing to serve the people and not for the money. Who says we need million dollar pay to attract talent into this sector?

I think there's a mistake with the polling stats, though.

Thank you for the info!

Hi Ivy

Mr Chiam and Mr Low are both heroes. They have integrity and depth of character; and most important of all - they are unafraid to speak up even when they are outnumbered in parliament and resources are clearly lacking. Such spirited fighters! MPs and MPs-wannabe should learn a thing or two from these gentlemen and how to be more compassionate and less elitist. They touched the lives of ordinary people and they remain faithful to their individual ideals.

Whatever the election results maybe in 2011, both Mr Chiam and Mr Low are winners and they have the love and adoration of the entire country! Let us not forget the good work that they have done.

I was at the SPP rally held in Potong Pasir yesterday, which was the first time in 5 years that I've been to potong pasir. The experience was truly priceless.

I haven't seen the same kind of adoration shown for another politician in recent times. Surely Mr Chiam must be doing SOMETHING right to be loved so dearly.

Toa Payoh and Bishan CITIZENS are so lucky to have some one like Mr Chiam serve them. I hope they know that.

thanks for your post which reflects my sentiments exactly :-) one minor technical detail - "why would a man want to become a minister...". it should be "become an MP". Mr Chiam is only drawing an MP's allowance of abt $15K per month (i think) which covers the costs of infra-structure, admin, staff, etc. However PAP MPs get to use for free the national resources such as People's Association, RCs, NTUC, etc. No wonder Mr Chiam has to work so many times harder at the expense of his health. I salute him!

Thank, Chiam.

Thank to the internet, we get to see the legacy of Chiam that the PAP government is so eagerly suppressed and hidden from the public. Yes, Mr Chiam, rest assure that your effort is not in vain, and we are the citizens will carry on to spread the words of democracy until Singapore is truly a democratic state.

As for the LKY, he will not have any legacy to speak off because whatever good deed he done in the past has been undo by the unpleasant things he do for opp party and those who vote against his party, notwithstanding how he abuse power and authority for his party and himself. To see how he continue to publish book to twist fact and promulgate his own "hard truth" show how pitiful and pathetic he is. I don't know what to say for this unrepentant dictator. History will not be kind to him.

Anonymous said...

Chiam and Low of opp parties are truly Singapore legends and we are proud of them whereas LKY, LHL and PAP are truly Singapore nightmare and we are disgusted with them.

It make me wonder what person with right slate of mind will want to associate with PAP other than for self-interest.

I wont shed a tear if LKY dies... but my life will never be the same if CST leaves us one day.

Emotion overcame me when Mr.Chiam in his frail state, replied a cheering crowd ".. you give me more applause than I deserve". Such humility.

Truth is, Mr Chiam stands taller than all those million dollar rubbish ministers combined.

Unknown said...

Truly an admirable hero. When I see that he operates from his tin-can office at the void deck for his meeting with the residents in Potong Pasir, my heart goes out to him.

Seeing his frail body, still speaking out for the residents, I can't help feeling sorry for him and angry at the ruiling party how he is treated as an MP.

With his weakened voice, he has touched more lives and hearts than the PAPs.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for taking the time to share about Mr Chiam!

Despite all the suffering, abuse and difficulties, he has fought on. His strong spirit shines through his weakened frame. He is a giant among us! He believes in Singaporeans eventhough the ruling party no longer believes in us.

Though only one tiny vote, come 7 May, I will honor your belief good sir! I hope one day, I can achieve even a fraction of your determination and nobility. Live long Mr Chiam!

I am a singer in a neighbourhood bar in the east. I am currently living in my step-aunt's house in BTP GRC. These past few weeks, I read alot about the opposition team, Singapore People's Party.

Today, I went to the bar just to hang out with friends. The tv was showing 11pm news on the GE rallies and could only read the headlines. A man came to me and asked if I am voting..this was my conversation:

Patron: Who is your opposition party?
Me: Chiam See Tong
Patron:*burst out laughing* I think he will get sympathy votes.
Me: I don't think so. A dedicated man like that deserves more votes.

I walked away and I feel proud standing up for Mr Chiam. Simply because he stands up for us.

God bless you, Mr Chiam. Thank you for your dedication. You made me proud to be a Singaporean.

Mr Chiam is one of the rare few who is well deserving of praise. Long before quality opposition existed, he has been the questioning voice and the eyes that help keep the government on track. Much has been said about the contributions of PAP, LKY and the likes; but Mr Chiam has in his own way been just as instrumental in making Singapore what it is today. Anyone who wishes to be a credible opposition would do well to learn from this true gentleman of politics.

A true story of a great fighter, patriot and fellow citizen who
truly display selflessness in every aspect.A man of great humility and determination. Will we or our chilldrend and even the childrens of our childrens be able to see and experience the heart, passion and strength of a single man in their era.A man....,tirelessly fought for the better of the citizens with meagre pay despite the humiliations hurled at him from all directions. You have my utmost admiration Mr CST.An unsung hero, who have truly walked amongst giants.May you be successful and i wish u health, prosperity and peace.
Wake up citizens,we are living in a society where money matters. The rich will be richer and the poor left to suffer.Question your right as a citizen and question the ministers who were elected to 'serve' you.My biggest anger is the foreign workers that have been accepted to work in the country,(putting domestic maids aside), that cannot speak a word of english.I was once chided by a cashier at a retail storw for not understanding chinese.im not showing any disrespect to any race but cant at least this foreign workers have to be able to communicate in english as it is the primary language in the country? How many hundreds of thousands or maybe millions of foreigners are taking up the jobs meant for the citizens. The moment i step out of my house,i will see a foreign worker at least every 15 minutes before i reach my destination.I do welcome foreign talents but open up your eyes...,Most of the foreign now are mostly those who dont speak our language and are not professionals.

I lived half my life in Hougang, the constituency under Mr Low Thia Khiang. The comaderie there is also very strong, and so I understand how fellow Potong Pasir residents feel about their home and Mr Chiam as their leader.

To Hougang residents, Mr Low is like a 'big brother' and a 'ka ki nang' (one of us). During the past elections, at the night of the election results, the whole estate burst into cheers and roars when the vote counts of Hougang was released.

Since then, I have stayed in Yishun and now at Punggol. I have never felt that same feeling when I was in Hougang ever since.

The PAP MPs and ministers do not seem to understand what is it that the simple citizens of Singapore relates to. Their definition of 'success' and 'doing a good job' is skewed toward mainly monetary growth, economical stability and material gains (new lift, new paint, new toilet, covered walkways). Not that these are not important, but they have missed the real issues by a huge mark.

Many of my students tell me ' I just want a job that can earn a lot of money and don't need to do a lot of things'. This is today's Singapore society. This is what our government has done. 'Good job PAP..'

Not even LKY, to me, measures up to CST.

This song lyrics resonates in every fibre of CST:

To dream ... the impossible dream ...
To fight ... the unbeatable foe ...
To bear ... with unbearable sorrow ...
To run ... where the brave dare not go ...
To right ... the unrightable wrong ...
To love ... pure and chaste from afar ...
To try ... when your arms are too weary ...
To reach ... the unreachable star ...

This is my quest, to follow that star ...
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far ...
To fight for the right, without question or pause ...
To be willing to march into Hell, for a Heavenly cause ...

And I know if I'll only be true, to this glorious quest,
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm,
when I'm laid to my rest ...
And the world will be better for this:
That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove, with his last ounce of courage,
To reach ... the unreachable star ...

Hi, thanks for sharing this on your blog. :)

I live in Toa Payoh, and I voted for Mr Chiam and his team at the GE2011. Sadly, they did not win.

I voted for SPP because I feel that they embody the spirit of Mr Chiam, and what he has been striving for.

Democracy is not a luxury, it is a necessity. And to live in a society, a country which we are proud to call home, where we can speak up for what we believe in without fear of being punished.

So to all admirers of Mr Chiam See Tong out there, I urge you, let not his work be in vain. Volunteer and be part of the change for the better.
